So how do we help to save the planet! – Continued
-
It’s a Jungle Out There: -
Modern furniture and electronic gadgets and gizmo’s can emit enough chemicals to make the air in our homes and offices more hazardous than the air outdoors. To ensure the air you breath isn’t toxic, why not surround yourself with vibrant and life enhancing plants.
Some plants are particularly effective absorbers of these harmful pollutants. Recommended plants include peace lilies, spider plants, Boston ferns, rubber plants and palms, to name but a few.
-
Educate the Little Ones: -
The future is ultimately in the hands of our children. It is therefore critical for us to teach and educate our children about the world in which they live, and how to live a sustainable life. One great method for involving children is to encourage them to write a poem about the wonders of nature, or get them to draw their favourite tree, plant, animal, etc.
As they write their poems, and draw their favourite pictures, why not help them to create an eco-tree. The poems and pictures make up the leaves of the tree.
-
Say No to Plastic: -
The next time you go shopping, when you approach the checkout, most cashiers automatically start placing your goods into a plastic carrier bag. Most of the time these plastic bags are totally unnecessary. When I am offered a plastic bag, I simply decline and explain to each and every single cashier that I do not require a plastic bag, as they are both wasteful and destructive to our planet.
If enough people adopt this simple step then one day, the message (meme) will take effect, and plastic bags will become a thing of the past.
-
Ice Ice baby: -
Covering food (and ice cubes) in your fridge or freezer (ideally with a plate rather than using cling film or foil) not only stops your food from drying out, but also prevents the residual moisture from condensing as ice on the walls of your fridge/freezer. A fridge with iced-up walls uses more energy and needs defrosting more often.
Fridges and freezers are probably the most expensive electrical items to run in your home. So make sure they’re not using more energy than they need.
-
Put a Cork in it: -
Choose real corks rather than plastic ones. Not only are natural corks easier to get out of the bottle, but they’re made from a renewable resource, grown in forests that support a huge variety of wildlife, including endangered species, such as the lynx. Once you’ve finished with the cork, why not collect them and use as fire-lighters or put them on your compost heap.

I’m loving your “99 Practical Ways” series! It’s a great reminder that small, easy changes in our behavior can help save the planet – Although one person on their own may not make a huge difference, collectively changing our habits is an important step in the right direction! Keep ‘em coming!

Many thanks for the support. In this dumbed down society we seem to live in, it is now more important than ever to ‘remind’ people how simple actions can help better the lives of themselves and everyone around them.
PS And if people still don’t listen, then line them up against a wall and shoot ‘em.
Especially litter louts.

As always, once again a very informative article. I feel so grateful to your efforts to educate people. We must shoulder the responsibility and do our best to save the lonely planet.

I agree with Tom whole heartedly. Sometimes it is easy to forget the damage that is being done and your 99 ways way help to remind me to ask for paper bags instead of plastic grocery bags. That way I have something to start the airtight. Better still, I put the reusable cloth eco bags in the truck for the next shopping trip.

Dear Gimme A Dream,
I’m personally very happy to read your response that YOU PUT REUSABLE CLOTH BAGS IN THE TRUCK FOR NEXT SHOPPING TRIP. I think all of us should use reusable cloth bags instead of either plastic or paper bags.
BUT… What good can we do if we still use truck for shopping? We can certainly use small car and AVOID trucks. If we replace few bags of plastic with cloth made ones, and pollute the environment the OTHER way by using truck, then its more a showoff than any real concern for environment.

Relating to your 8th point, avoiding plastic as much as possible is ideal for everybody and their environment, that’s why we launched a site devoted to WOOD items.
