Guest post by satellitedish.org

We have known, for quite some time, that the fossil fuels we use today are a finite source of energy; we only seem to disagree on when those sources will run dry. Alternative sources have been around for quite some time, including electric power and solar power, but none has yet supplanted dead dinosaurs. Presented here are some other fuels, some strange, some downright weird.

1) Trick-or-Treat – University students in England tested a Formula racing car that ran on fuel made in part from waste chocolate from a Cadbury plant. No word on whether-or-not the car was eaten after testing was completed.

2) Gobble Gobble – For turkey-lovers (Ben Franklin suggested, tongue-only-partly-in-cheek, that the turkey would make a more noble national bird than the eagle), the idea of putting a Tom into the gas tank might seem anathema, but viable fuel can be made from virtually all parts of the bird.

3) Starbucks In the Tank – Coffee grounds, which contain a lot of oils, make a bio-fuel that is relatively cheap and clean to produce, comes from an abundant source, and, of course, makes the morning commute a much more aromatic experience.

4) Paper or Plastic? – Both paper and plastic can be made into fuel, and each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, though the future may show us many new ways to recycle waste products in a green manner.

5) Blow Me Down – Wind turbines have been mounted on vehicles, and they have been used to charge batteries that then power the vehicle. This system works best for those who live in tunnel-free expanses of windy salt-flats.

6) Mulch for the Minivan – Not as strange as it sounds, wood chips and sawdust are prime ingredients of what are called “bio-mass” fuels, which are foreseen by some as the most likely replacements for petroleum-based fuels.

7) Styrofoam – With as many styrofoam cups as we see littering our highways, it would be a nice thing to see if economically feasible methods of converting those cups into useful fuels can be developed.

8 Dung Beetles? – Methane gas, available in all your friendly neighborhood cow-patties, can be rendered into fuels that can run an automobile.

9) Beans, Beans, They’re Good for Your Car – Beans, soybeans in particular, are used to make bio-fuels, and are among the few sources that show real universal promise.

10) Lend Me Your Ears – Ears of corn, that is; ethanol is a fuel already in wide use around the globe, and can be made from crops such as corn, potatoes, sugar cane and the ever-popular manioc (known more commonly as “cassava”, one of the most-eaten sources of carbohydrates on the planet). Henry Ford was using ethanol in his Model T’s as early as 1908.

Electricity is something most people take for granted and don’t really have any idea how it’s generated. They just flip a light switch or plug into an outlet and pay the monthly bills for the service. This is amazing considering the fact that people lived without electricity for thousands of years. Even though we’ve only had this luxury for less than 200 years, most of us would have a hard time living without it. If something catastrophic happened or if you just want to live “off the grid”, what are some cool ways to provide the power you need for your own home?

1) Solar – If you live in an area with plentiful sunshine, solar panels would be a likely source to consider. There has been extensive research and advances in technology since solar power was first developed. However, this wouldn’t be a good choice for those who have limited sun.

2) Wind – Others may live in a place where the wind blows all the time. For them, harnessing the wind makes the most sense. People have been using wind power long before electricity was even discovered. The problem is that when the wind isn’t blowing, power is not being generated and can’t be stored.

3) Hydroelectric – A consistent flow of water can also be used to turn a turbine to generate electricity. You don’t need a huge dam to provide power for a single home. A small river or creek that flows continually could be all you would need.

4) Gasoline generator – The most common way people deal with power outages is to run a gasoline powered generator. This could get pretty expensive if you ran it 24/7, but could be feasible if you carefully scheduled your energy use.

5) Diesel – Some generators are powered by diesel fuel. These are usually larger units for businesses or hospitals that can’t afford to be without power. You could have plenty of power for a very large home if you can afford on of these.

6) Natural gas – If you have access to inexpensive natural gas, you could use it to power an electric generator. Anything that can be used to run a combustion engine can be used to generate electricity.

7) Bio-fuels – Since fossil fuels are limited and can get expensive, bio-fuels like methane can also be used to run generators. Farmers with a lot of animal waste use the gas produced by it to power their farms.

8 Geothermal – Using the heat available underground to generate electricity is a fairly new technology and could be quite expensive to implement. However, after the initial setup costs, you’d be set for life.

9) Thermoelectric – This is also a new concept being developed that uses temperature changes to create and electrical charge. Thermoelectric generators (or TEG’s) have been developed for homeowners using a variety of heat sources to produce power.

10) Piezoelectric – The use of pressure or other mechanical changes on a solid material to generate electricity is still in its infant stages, so it may be a while before the technology is developed to the point of powering your home. Piezoelectricity is something to watch for in the future though.

The main concepts to remember when looking for alternative power sources for your home are simple. You need a plentiful, inexpensive source of energy to run and electric generator. You need to look carefully at the availability of your energy source and the initial cost of the power generating system. Within the relatively short period of time people have been using electricity, we now rely on it for practically every aspect of our daily lives.

People who realize this are constantly looking for new ways to make sure they have the electricity they need to power their modern conveniences. With some research, you can find a way to self-sufficiently provide power for your home.

The (Environmental Protection agency) EPA under attack

This guest post is by Eric Stevenson
With the state of the present economy, lawmakers are searching for any cuts that can be made to federal and state budgets. In this climate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in danger of losing $3 billion worth of funds – nearly a third of its budget. Many times, ecological benefits are difficult to quantify and therefore hard to present as justification for the EPA’s use of monetary resources. However, there is one area in which the EPA has indisputably shown large returns on our financial investment: human health.

The free market alone cannot be left responsible for the health and well-being of American citizens. Unfortunately, history has shown us time and time again that many employers and manufacturers will put profits ahead of the health and safety of their employees as well as their consumers. The use of asbestos in factories and construction sites through much of the twentieth century is a perfect example of this. Asbestos is an effective fireproofing material and, perhaps more importantly, is cheap and readily available, so some companies continued to use it for decades after the health risks were known.

As early as the 1940s, doctors knew of the connection between asbestos and symptoms of mesothelioma, an extremely aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the chest or abdomen. However, companies such as Johns Manville continued to sell household insulation that contained asbestos until the late 1970s. Internal memos circulated by the Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the largest paper producers in the United States, show that employers knew of the dangers of the fraying asbestos materials used to fireproof their factories, yet did not warn their employees or provide proper protective equipment.

Because mesothelioma symptoms can take between 20 and 50 years to manifest, we may not yet know the full effect that the widespread use of asbestos has had on public health. Tragically, mesothelioma life expectancy is very poor, and nearly everyone who develops this type of cancer will die as a direct result of it. However, because of ever-stricter EPA regulations on the amount of asbestos fibers permissible in the air, asbestos use has dropped dramatically since the 1970s. Though asbestos can still be found in older buildings – where it needs to be handled with extreme care, and only by professionals – the risk of exposure is greatly reduced from what it was only a few decades ago.

The EPA needs continued support if it is to do its job properly, and that is not limited to financial support. Awareness is a key tool that greatly improves the agency’s effectiveness. When people become aware of the presence of a toxin in everyday materials, they refuse to accept it in their homes or workplaces and make sure that lawmakers hear their voices. Despite our country’s financial troubles, we cannot afford to hinder the EPA in its quest to make environmental health a priority.

How did ‘Global Warming‘ become such a huge and widely accepted scam?

» Could Al Gore the whore be the main culprit, was it part of his campaign in the run-up towards trying to become the next president of the United States!

» Perhaps the ‘global warming’ campaign began it’s life when the UN was presented with a hockey stick graph by Michael Mann et al in 2001.

» Or maybe the discussion on man-made global warming was made popular by Al Gore’s film, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.

Al Gore bases his whole argument of global warming on one all important piece of evidence taken from ice-core surveys, where scientists drill deep into the ice to look back into Earth’s climate history. The first findings of the drill expedition in Vostock revealed as Al Gore correctly points out is the clear correlation between carbon dioxide and temperature. However his correlation is topsy-turvy to say the least.

The problem lies in the fact that Gore’s assumption that CO2 and temperature rises are linked is in fact the wrong way round.

There have been several major ice-core surveys and every one of them shows the same thing: –

As temperatures rise or fall, and then after a few hundred years carbon dioxide follows.

In other words, carbon dioxide is NOT the cause of global warming. It is global warming which increases the levels of carbon dioxide. CO2 changes merely follow or lag after temperature changes have already occurred.

This now begs the question…

‘How do higher temperatures lead to more CO2 in the atmosphere?’

In order to answer the question we must first understand that CO2 is a natural gas and it’s produced in all living things. Of all the living things here on Earth, the largest producer of CO2 into the atmosphere is not done by humans, not even industry, cars, or planes. In fact the largest producers of CO2 comes from the oceans. Other big players in the contribution of CO2 include volcanoes, animals, dying vegetation, and bacteria. Animals and bacteria alone produce some 150Gigatonnes of CO2 each year compared to a mere 6.5Gigatonnes produced from humans.

All global warming models assume that man-made CO2 is the main cause of climate change rather than the sun or the clouds.

As stated, the largest producer of CO2 is from the oceans. The more they warm up the more they produce CO2. Conversely, the cooler they are, the more they suck in. But why is there a time lag of hundreds of years between the change in temperature and the change in the amount of carbon dioxide going into or out of the sea?

The reasons is that oceans are so big and so deep they take literally hundreds of years to warm up and cool down. The current warming trend started way before people had cars or even lights. In the past 150 years the world’s temperature has risen just over half a degree Celsius, but most of that rise occurred before 1940. Between 1940 and 1975 the temperature actually dropped.

If CO2 doesn’t drive the Earth’s climate. What does?

The answer is simple: – The Sun. To be more exact there is close correlation between what the sun was doing and changes in temperature on Earth. In fact solar activity (sun spot cycles) rose sharply to 1940 and fell back until the 1970′s.

We are in a sense inside the Sun’s atmosphere. The intensity of the Sun’s magnetic field more than doubled during the 20th century.

Global warming is happening on Mars and Pluto as well. Since there are no SUVs on Mars, CO2 can’t be causing global warming.

Believing that human activities can change the weather is like believing that the earth is the centre of the universe. Perhaps such topics such as global warming have been rammed down our throats in order to make the burden of carbon taxes more palatable when they are eventually forced upon us.

What are your thoughts?

"Find something children enjoy and these habits are likely to last a lifetime."

Energy Smart Schoools

Ask the staff at your childs school to match your green efforts at home by cutting back on energy waste on campus. Some energy saving and environmental tips include; set up a community garden, vegetable patch for the children at school, turn off lights in classrooms when not in use, get rid of vending machines stocked with sugar rich canned drinks and overpackaged snacks.

Get the children and teachers involved in energy saving projects which the school as a whole can take part in.

Decondition Yourself

Minimize your energy dependence on energy-hungry air conditioning by tackling heat the natural way. For example; shade sunny windows with curtains or blinds, and place trees and climbing plants outside. Open windows at night to allow cross-ventilation, install a large fan in the attic, and run it in the evening only.

Eat Before You Shop

It’s frightening how much food the average household throws away. Studies show that we buy more food if we shop when hungry. So eat a hearty meal, and prepare a concise shopping list before frequenting the shops. Help reduce this gluttoneous and frivolous act of food waste by simply avoiding impulse shopping on an empty stomach.

Dishwashers are Go

Running a dishwasher can actually have less impact on the environment than doing dishes by hand if you choose a water and energy-efficient model and put it on only when there’s a full load, using a low-temperature setting and eco-friendly dishwasher powder or tablets. Also with a dishwasher, there is no need to pre-rinse items. To maintain an energy saving and environmentally friendly dishwasher ensure that the filter is regularly maintained to avoid any build up of limescale.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any suggestions or practical tips on how to save our planet?

So how do we help to save the planet and our environment! – Continued

Think Outside the Box: -

Our children are the generation of tomorrow. For this simple reason we must nurture, educate, and pamper to their every need.

A bored child can be brought to life by a simple cardboard box, which a fertile imagination can turn into anything from a den to a spaceship. Before you recycle the box, let your child have endless hours of fun with a simple cardboard box and some paint. Of course, this simple concept can be used for most household items which we throw away without even thinking twice about (milk cartons, cereal boxes, etc). You get the idea.

Go Green, Less is More: -

It requires much more land, water and energy to extract food from animals, than from vegetables. For example, in the USA it takes 140 litres of water to produce one kilogram of wheat, but a whopping 4,400 litres of water to produce a kilogram of beef.

If the idea of becoming a vegetarian is too unpalatable, then at least try and cut down on your meat consumption to one or two times a week.

Promote your local community and try to source locally raised, organic meat specialists. Help put a stop to the corporate rot that is the supermarket and their disgusting trade policies.

It’s good to Share : -

In this dumbed down world we are moving towards, it is now more important than ever to keep all communication channels open. If you have a good idea which you’d like to share, if you need something, or if you’ve got something to offer, then put up a notice in your local shop, or your community website.

Promote togetherness and well being for both yourself, others and the environment.

Calm Down You Speed Freaks: -

Attention all speed freaks! Driving at 56mph is 25 percent more fuel-efficient and environmental than driving at 70mph. Not to mention you’re much less likely to wrap your car around a tree.

Other methods for increasing fuel efficiency include regularly checking tyre pressures, removing roof racks, extra loads when not in use, coasting (not recommended), and of course not being a speed junky and pressing down too hard on the accelerator.

Little But Often: -

If you try to take on too many of these ‘Save the Planet‘ and environmental suggestions at once, then you may end up doing most of them only a few times before lapsing. To avoid eco-warrior burnout, try to add a few of your favourite suggestions to your routine each week and build up your portfolio of lifestyle changes gradually.

Remember to pursue your eco-journey in baby steps. Little but often is a far more effective way of producing results, than trying to save the planet in one afternoon.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any suggestions or practical tips on how to save our planet?

So how do we help to save the planet! – Continued

It’s a Jungle Out There: -

Modern furniture and electronic gadgets and gizmo’s can emit enough chemicals to make the air in our homes and offices more hazardous than the air outdoors. To ensure the air you breath isn’t toxic, why not surround yourself with vibrant and life enhancing plants.

Some plants are particularly effective absorbers of these harmful pollutants. Recommended plants include peace lilies, spider plants, Boston ferns, rubber plants and palms, to name but a few.

Educate the Little Ones: -

The future is ultimately in the hands of our children. It is therefore critical for us to teach and educate our children about the world in which they live, and how to live a sustainable life. One great method for involving children is to encourage them to write a poem about the wonders of nature, or get them to draw their favourite tree, plant, animal, etc.

As they write their poems, and draw their favourite pictures, why not help them to create an eco-tree. The poems and pictures make up the leaves of the tree.

Say No to Plastic: -

The next time you go shopping, when you approach the checkout, most cashiers automatically start placing your goods into a plastic carrier bag. Most of the time these plastic bags are totally unnecessary. When I am offered a plastic bag, I simply decline and explain to each and every single cashier that I do not require a plastic bag, as they are both wasteful and destructive to our planet.

If enough people adopt this simple step then one day, the message (meme) will take effect, and plastic bags will become a thing of the past.

Ice Ice baby: -

Covering food (and ice cubes) in your fridge or freezer (ideally with a plate rather than using cling film or foil) not only stops your food from drying out, but also prevents the residual moisture from condensing as ice on the walls of your fridge/freezer. A fridge with iced-up walls uses more energy and needs defrosting more often.

Fridges and freezers are probably the most expensive electrical items to run in your home. So make sure they’re not using more energy than they need.

Put a Cork in it: -

Choose real corks rather than plastic ones. Not only are natural corks easier to get out of the bottle, but they’re made from a renewable resource, grown in forests that support a huge variety of wildlife, including endangered species, such as the lynx. Once you’ve finished with the cork, why not collect them and use as fire-lighters or put them on your compost heap.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any suggestions or practical tips for saving our planet?
