By default, wordpress automatically adds nofollow into all links added in a wordpress blog. The reason for this is to stop spammers having their wicked way and pulling in loads of traffic from your blog. But why have the nofollow in every link if the comments are moderated???
The simple answer is that if your blog is moderated, then there is simply no need for the rel=”nofollow” to be automatically inserted into every link. The tag was set up by Google as a way of mothering and controlling it’s humble servants - us, the bloggers.
To reward your readers who leave a comment on your blog, simply install the following plugin: -Do follow plugin which takes out the nofollow code in any links placed on my blog.
What does all this mean??? It means that whenever someone visits your blog, they will be credited in the form of increasing their Page Rank (PR), and all they did was take the time to write a comment on your blog. Power to the (little) people. So get commenting folks, and watch your page rank grow.

A hearty thanks from all the honest bloggers out there who like surfing reading and commenting (and watching their Page rank grow a bit in the process:P)

That’s the spirit undercover-centrist. Spread the love and comment away. Now to say hi to your blog and drop a comment.
I had a page rank of two yesterday, now back down to zero
Perhaps Google have reprimanded me for daring to speak out and saying no to rel=”nofollow”
Ah well, we must stick to our convictions I guess.

Yes google seems to spend a lot time changing its mind!My pages bounce around the index like yo-yo but no follow seems particularly obstructive to the free passage of the net. Especially when places like facebook implement it. Its basically an attempt to entrench the current web heirarchy:D hows that for a conspiracy theory.
Yes we must. Because Blogger does not let one remove no follow or if it does i do not have the coding experience to enable it (can’t wait till its financially viable to move to a properly hosted blog) I have to establish backlinks manually, so while it may take a week you should see a few of my blogs starting to register in your technorati authority, my way of spreading the love. Hopefully it helps you get back to PR2 as well.

Googles’ page ranking algorithm has not ever been published, there has been many people experimenting to try and determine how it works. As far as im aware each web page can potentially get a page ranking of upto 5, this will happen, if at all at the top most level of your navigation, ie. homepage and initial links from here. The search bots read your page from top to bottom so the upper most links have precedence over the others. This page ranking is spread thereafter depending on how many links you have on that page. nofollow stops the rank (for that page) been convoluted. I think you will most likely find your blog pages to barely register on google search rankings if at all, if and when you enable the above mentioned plugin.
Just be aware it will affect your rankings massively and in return you will loose massive amounts of traffic.
ill dig out a few links when i have time, if anyone is interested.

Drew

It’s nice to finally hear somebody say something intelligent on this topic. Now that there are some impressive SPAM filtering solutions (like akismet) out there for your blogging software it just doesn’t make sense to nofollow all of the links. If everybody started doing this intelligently it would be much easier for some of the great blogs from little-know authors to be noticed! If you have something intelligent to say on my blog I will definitely follow the link to yours, it’s a moderated endorsement and perfectly within the Google Webmaster Guidelines.
…Now to install that plugin…
June 17th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Drew, many thanks for that valuable feedback.
The problem is that I am totally confused now with regards to the nofollow plugin - should I or shouldn’t I use it???
I did read up on the plugin prior to installing it, and the ethics of the plugin made sense at the time. But obviously if my traffic and ranking will be massively affected then I will definitely uninstall.
If you have any more information on the subject Drew, then I would be most grateful for any links, info. Not just for me but for other fellow bloggers who wish to understand the whole process of nofollow and its’ implications.
Many thanks for the info.

Hi Eric
I knew things were too good to be true. Drew has written a valid comment on this subject which suggests that the plugin isn’t as useful as it appears to be.
I look forward to receiving more information from Drew or indeed any nofollow expert, so that matters on this contentious subject can be resolved once and for all.
Until then, I will continue to use the nofollow plugin as I moderate all comments on my blog and therefore I feel like I do not to be mothered by the big boys and have my blog ‘cared for’ by outside forces. Unless of course my traffic is drastically affected
PS I have included a trackback to your blog Eric in this comment.
Cheers

Been reading many articles about follow/no follow. Yours is the first one that was clear enough to give simple instructions on how to implement the use of the plugin.
Seems most mmo writers think that we are all techno mavens and understand all the gibberish. Hell I’m old and I have to learn all of this stuff each key stroke at a time.
Thanks so much, going to install the plugin now.

This is a nice initiative you’ve started. However, the problem wont be dealt with, unless blog software / system providers such as WordPress actually stop making the “nofollow” a default setting in all new blogs.
… most newbies dont know about Nofollow and don’t care whether links on their blogs are followed or not.

I agree that the problem needs to be addressed with the software conglomerates.
In the mean time, all I do is pass on the message ref dofollow, that us all. It is up to the bloggers to read and learn more about their subject matter.
If they don’t care whether links on their blog are followed or not - then that is their loss. When they wonder why they a page rank of 0 and no links, then I hope they don’t come crying to me.

I have been designing a website for a while now and have finally got down to the busines of ranking! I have submitted press relases, articles, and most recenly, started submitting to places like furl, digg and some of the others. Any way rambling on, I have looked at my competitor who is number one for the keywords I am looking for, while I am no 9 in google to see what the difference is, I looked at the links to his site. A couple more social bookmarks than me! While I have press releases and article submissions to high pr sites which he does not, and magically links to a video on you tube! to cut a long story short I believe along with the no follow rule that just as in the old days, even more so today Information is Power or today money! and google and yahoo are consolidating their grip on the web by closing in more and more defined areas of space on the net so that, they along with somebody, who is paying them no matter what the conent!! will benefit. the old adage of quality on your website will shine through, will soon no longer apply!
Yahoo answers is a good example of this! if your website is listed in Yahoo answers then it is a good source for attaining higher pagerank! THIS IS THE CARROT!! But the STICK which will beat you in the end is that Yahoo in the future will then use this information to their own financial benefit! and shut the websites out despite content and popularity that are not affiliated to their advertising programs! I also fimly believe that Yahoo is using this information to gather information about search queries, This is already happening now, but will only get worse and the same will happen to blogs eventually!!!

It certainly is a great idea, it’s a simple but effective way of spreading the love between fellow bloggers, and being rewarded for your efforts.
Ref (Nota bene it’s been indexed high by Google!)? - Not sure what you mean there my friend. What’s been googled high.
If you mean the search term Rel=”nofollow” removed, then yes, I’ve just checked and…yippee I’m nubmer one.
If I search Rel=”nofollow”, then I’m on page 7
PS
@Detector Pro, sorry mate, can’t help you there, I’m anti-blogger, so I can’t help you out. I would suggest blogcatalog.com as a good starting point for seeking help on blogger tech know how.

I’ve always been pretty much a passive web user - just reading and learning and browsing, but never really commenting. I genuinely never realised it had such an effect on PageRank, but thinking about it it makes perfect sense! Looks like I’ll join in a few conversations in the future rather than just enjoying the show

I think the trend is building in the online (and blogging) world, and as you say, if moderated, how is it a problem?
