With the state of the present economy, lawmakers are searching for any cuts that can be made to federal and state budgets. In this climate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in danger of losing $3 billion worth of funds – nearly a third of its budget. Many times, ecological benefits are difficult to quantify and therefore hard to present as justification for the EPA’s use of monetary resources. However, there is one area in which the EPA has indisputably shown large returns on our financial investment: human health.
The free market alone cannot be left responsible for the health and well-being of American citizens. Unfortunately, history has shown us time and time again that many employers and manufacturers will put profits ahead of the health and safety of their employees as well as their consumers. The use of asbestos in factories and construction sites through much of the twentieth century is a perfect example of this. Asbestos is an effective fireproofing material and, perhaps more importantly, is cheap and readily available, so some companies continued to use it for decades after the health risks were known. My belief is that we only have our beloved governments to thank and the corporate lobbyists of the big oil companies who do what they do behind closed doors to keep us, the little people from accessing any other alternative energy source besides oil.
